U/W: 279 Ghanaians,107 Foreign Nationals arrested and screened in joint security operations – National Security Advisor

The National Security Advisor, Brigadier General (Rtd) Emmanuel Okyere has revealed that 279 Ghanaians including 107 foreign nationals have been arrested and thoroughly screened for various reasons by a joint multi-national operation team known as Condango IV.

According to him, the 107 foreign nationals arrested for the period of the operations are from neighboring Burkina Faso, Togo, Niger, Mali, Nigeria and Benin.

Speaking at a news conference in Wa, the Upper West Regional Capital, Brigadier General (Rtd) Emmanuel Okyere disclosed that, the multi-national joint operation team formed in 2017 include some officers from neighboring Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Mali.

The rationale behind the formation of the joint operation team is to prevent terrorist attacks and also to fight transnational organized crimes within the country’s borders and also to prevent highway robberies and as well fight illegal mining.

Brigadier General Emmanuel Okyere stated that, the current operation formed the fourth operation undertaken by the joint team since its formation. The first operation took place in May 2018 between Ghana, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Benin. Similar operation took place in 2019.

He indicated that, the operation undertaken by the team never aimed at any anything group but rather to search for criminal networks base on intelligence gathered with professionalism.

“I have noticed that people on the grounds initially thought we were aiming at a particular ethnic group but later understood that, we are looking for network of criminals and all operations have been done through intelligence led and professional operations”.

The National Security Advisor was happy to the extent that, the purpose of the operations has been achieved and it is his believe that, when the exercise is continued in the subsequent years, there will be some security in boarder areas. He pointed out that, the continuity of the operation will also bring collaborations and cooperation between the neighboring countries.

Brigadier General (Rtd) Emmanuel Okyere also mentioned that, their consultation with some stakeholders in some parts of their operational zones revealed that water supply forms part of their priority and some 7 communities will be provided with boreholes as a means of community development.

He therefore called on all citizens within their operational zones to collaborate and cooperate with the team since the exercise will bring safety within the borders and reduce crime.

Meanwhile, some residents of Kpaanamuna and Manwe communities in the Wa East District are living in fears after joint Military; Police and Immigration officers left them into panic on the 23rd and 25th day of November, 2021.

On Tuesday, November 23, 2021, information gathered by Radio Progress indicated that, inhabitants of Kpaanamuna were going through their normal daily activities when the team arrived from nowhere into the community. They arrested and beat people and as well as vandalized and set equipments used for illegal mining ablaze.

On Thursday, November 25th, 2021, the joint security operatives were at Manwe to undergo a similar operation in the community. Information available to Radio Progress shows that, some properties belonging to residents were also destroyed and burnt including motorbikes and tricycles.
