Ignorance and negligence continue to be a major cause of fire accidents in the Upper West Region; Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service in the region, Mr. Martin Bakobie has stated.
According to the Public Relations Officer most of fire accidents can be avoided if people became more conscious of fire safety rules at their homes and workplaces.
He said the doors of the Ghana National Fire Service are always opened and appealed to estate developers and building engineers to draw closer to the service to discuss their building plans and also get advise on safety proof measures they can incorporate in their structures.
Mr. Martin Bakobie made this known to Progress News in an interview in Wa.
He raised concern that most buildings and structures in the region are built without any proper plan.
He said this had led to the encroachment of some access routes in the municipality noting that in some communities should any disaster strike, it would be difficult for the Service to get access routes into homes to salvage properties and lives.
Mr. Martin Bakobie further stated that getting access to water for firefighting is currently a challenge.
He said several appeals for more hydrants to be created within the Wa Municipality for firefighting have proved futile.
