The Chief of Eremon a farming community in the Lawra municipality of the Upper West Region Naa Volkur Nyour Tang has called for the establishment of a groundnut processing factory at Eremon to facilitate job creation for the teeming youth in the area to reduce unemployment.
The Chief who made the appeal at Eremon during a visit by the Flagbearer and Leader of the opposition NDC John Mahama as part of his four day campaign tour of the region said the people of Eremon are predominantly groundnut farmers.
Naa Nyour Tang recounted how groundnut produced by farmers in the community have been perishing over the past year’s due to the lack of a processing factory and described it as unfortunate.
“Eremon celebrates a festival called Senkaa festival. It has been in existence for the past 6years and counting. It acts as a way of ushering in developments reflecting on the needs of our community. Some communities such as Dazuri, Zimpen and Naburnye through the support of an NGO (RESULT), established a small scale groundnut oil extraction industry in order to gain optimum benefits from the raw products and also to increase the income level of the farmers. However, for lack of financial support, it is sad to mention that these laudable projects in the said communities have been abandoned. It is therefore my hope that when you come to power, your government will take advantage in creating a groundnut processing factory that will process groundnut into products for local consumption and for the export market.
He again noted that an NGO called RESULT established a small-scale groundnut oil extraction industry in the area in order to realise the optimum benefits of the raw groundnut produce but the lack of financial support had led to the collapse of the industry. He thus charged the next NDC government to consider establishing a groundnut processing factory”. He said.
The Former President and Flagbearer of the NDC John Mahama addressing the Chiefs and people of Eremon, Brifor, and Babile as well as Daffiama, Bussie and Issa at separate gatherings assured them that the next administration of the NDC will address the challenges confronting their respective constituencies.
Mr Mahama noted that he will complete all projects started under his tenure and been abandoned by the Nana Akufo Addo and Bawumia government spanning from roads, health and educational facilities among others.
