Upper West Region Records 22 Road Crashes in the Second Quarter of 2018


The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service in the Upper West Region, has  recorded twenty- two (22) road crashes in the second quarter of the year 2018.

In all the accident cases reported, eleven (11) cases  were fatal, seven (7) serious and four (4) minor cases.

The Wa Municipality recorded the highest number of road crashes in the region with thirteen (13) cases followed by the Nandom District with three (3) road crashes, two(2) road crashes in the Wa East District and Jirapa District whiles the Lawra and Nadowli –Kaleo District recorded a case each .

Sixteen(16) tricycles were involved in accidents whiles fourteen(14) motorsbikes and ten(10) commercial vehicles were involved in accidents in the region. 

The Upper West Regional Commander for MTTU, ASP Emelia Asiedua Gyekye made this known in an interview with Progress News in Wa.

She said twelve(12) persons lost their lives through road crashes in the region in the second quarter of 2018 whiles twenty–two(22) persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

ASP Emelia Gyekye entreated motorist to always wear crash helmets as the number of persons who lost their lives in the region in the second quarter of 2018 increased as compared to last year second quarter.

She said reports shows that the unit as at the second quarter of last year recorded thirty–three road crashes with ten deaths, nine fatalities, thirteen serious injuries and eleven minor injuries.

She said her outfit is collaborating with the National Road Safety Commission in the region to educate people to adhere to road safety regulations.

ASP Emelia said the MTTU is currently collaborating with the Wa Municipal Assembly to curtail double parking and unauthorized parking on some major streets in the municipality.
